The Intelligent Fishing Approach using SGC Maps

The first step and foundation of Intelligent Fishing using SGC Maps is planning. Professional fishing guides are consistently more successful than the average fisher, because they spend time planning hours before actually getting in the water –their livelihood depends on it. Using the detailed planning information that SGC Maps provide you will allow you to make more informed decisions and subsequently improve your fishing success.

To facilitate in the planning step, SGC Maps provide a Quick Stats Chart that includes the following detailed information about each logical stream section: zone, number of productive fishing stretches (POI); number of canoe accesses; wade difficulty; amount of gravel fishing areas and public accesses; and, approximate distance and time needed to fish section. SGC Maps also provide a Map Locator, Stream Summary by Section and an Ohio Road Map to help you with the planning step.

Now that you have completed the planning step, the time has come to get on the water and execute the plan. To facilitate in the execution step, SGC Maps provides detailed stream information at your fingertips that describes and illustrates what’s around the next bend. Think of SGC Maps as a pseudo river fishing guide that accompanies you as you wade or float down an unfamiliar stream or stream stretch providing the information that will reduce your learning curve and improve fishing success. The on-stream reference information provided within SGC Maps includes location of primary fishing stretches, GPS waypoints of primary stretches, approximate distances between each POI (point-of-interest), substrate characteristics, streets and access points, and much more fishing-related details.

Although a GPS unit is not required to utilize SGC Maps, it will allow you find the exact location of the POI (point-of-interest) illustrated on the SGC Map. In most cases, SGC Maps provide enough detail to allow you to find the relative location of the POI, including distance to reach POI, landmarks, feeder streams and cliff areas.

The last step, but not any less important than the previous two steps, is to record (in an organized manner) the results of your executed plan. More specifically, record the equipment and presentations used during the execution step, weather and water conditions, newly discovered productive stream stretches, and other related information. The main reason for recording is that this activity will provide you with valuable information during the planning step of future fishing trips, and provide you with memorable accounts of past fishing experiences. The goal is to collect enough information where patterns become evident and then you can match current conditions with established patterns. Although this process is not entirely fail-safe, you will improve your odds of being successful.

To facilitate in the recording step, SGC Maps provide a Stream Fishing Log and Stream Fishing Journal. The Stream Fishing Log provides a place for you to log GPS coordinates and descriptions of your own discovered productive stream stretches found within a given logical section of an SGC Map. And the Stream Fishing Journal provides a place for you to record weather and water conditions, equipment and presentations used, descriptions of steelhead caught, and allows you to specify the SGC Map and point-of-interest (POI) that this information relates to.

By utilizing the Intelligent Fishing tools provided within each SGC Map, you will improve your fishing success!
