Description:
Hexagenia, Extended Body
The Hex hatch is on! Get your waders - and your headlamp - and be prepared for some of the most spectacular dry fly fishing available.
The "Michigan Caddis" is really the Great Olive-Winged Drake or Hexagenia, limbata. While it is present in all regions of North America, the most celebrated hatches occur in the Midwest, on such rivers as the Au Sable, the Pere Marquette, and the Big Manistee. The Hexagenias or "Hexs" are one of the largest mayfly species and hatch in very prolific numbers. Adding to the thrill of this hatch is that primary emergence usually occurs at dusk and into the early evening hours. The H. limbata can be found on some eastern and western river systems, but is most indigenous to lakes in these regions.
