The term "midge" here is used to imply a smaller version of the same pattern. This pattern is one of the best early season mayfly patterns.

The Blue Dun and Blue Quill are excellent imitations for the P. adoptiva. Hatches of these insect will start just after the water temperature is above 50-degrees Fahrenheit for a few days. Fish from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. The midge version of this pattern is more successful during the latter part of the day where water temperatures tend to fall. Fish in slack water zones and back eddies.
